Maria Tribe’s paintings are visual diaries based on journeys which
range from long-distance trips around the world to walks in London
and Brighton.
She has travelled extensively to South-East Asia, Australia, India,
the Caribbean, Southern Europe and recently, Egypt. Inspiration is
derived from landscape, music and language; a passion for water:
scuba diving and the luminous colours of underwater seascapes;
the architecture of Barcelona and Turkey; the palaces and temples
of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. There is a fascination with
history and everyday items such as graphics and packaging- drawings,
photographs and collected materials are central to the work.
"The paintings are instinctive- I create a space to allow them to evolve
and unravel. I aim to capture the fragments of memories which form
the essence of an experience.
