“The
process of landscape painting mirrors the construction of the
landscape itself. It
shifts between order and disorder; structure and chaos; meaning and
accident; in a state of constant flux.
The narrative produced by paint, substance and mark reflects
these ambiguities within its physical execution. The
finished piece is arrived at via a process of deconstruction, taking
photographic reference and running it through a series of
enlargements by computer or photocopier until the image is randomly
pixelated and transformed. This element of chance introduces suggestions for
composition, mark and colour and acts as a visual starting point in
the painting process. Something that appears recognisable may be
constructed from a series of random marks and something apparently
random may become recognisable.
In this sense the work operates and plays with the boundary
lines of what is real and what is imagined.”
