After
graduating from Loughborough University in 2004, I spent 4
months travelling around Europe by train.
Drawing inspiration from my surroundings and daily
interactions, my latest paintings have manifested from the
photos I took. By
experimenting with the juxtaposition of different images, I
aim to subtly blend them into a completely new form,
highlighting new areas and creating contrast.
Light and dark tones are slightly emphasised, often
creating a stylised finish.
I
am very interested in the artist’s control over what the
viewer sees and lack of control over their interpretation.
Once in a gallery space, the artist has no power to
deliver meaning to the viewer, only the marks on the canvas
can try to do this. However
the large margin for interpretation means the artist has a
very slim chance of their intended meaning being realised, as
the viewer draws upon personal experiences.
Therefore, my intended meaning could taint the
enjoyment of the work for someone else and thus becomes quite
irrelevant. The formal
elements of painting are very important, with colour and form
remaining key aspects in my work, and aesthetics being the
principal concern.
